📚 🎶 Music, Magic and the Science of Chills

Lesson Plan #29

Happy Monday morning!

It’s time to pump up the volume in the classroom! A new study out of Finland has found that listening to music you love releases natural feel-good chemicals in the brain. These are the same chemicals that light up during a big laugh, a good meal or even a hug.

Using brain scans, researchers discovered that music activates the brain’s pleasure system, and the more receptors a person has, the more powerful the effect. That might explain why some people get goosebumps (a.k.a. “musical chills”) when the right song plays. Even better? These same brain chemicals help with things like stress relief and pain reduction. So yes—those feel-good playlists might actually be boosting classroom well-being.

Whether it’s a calming tune during morning meeting, an energizer before math or a celebration song at the end of the day, a little music might be just what your students need to feel more connected, relaxed and even more ready to learn.
